With all the talk of the guilds (see Mykola's posts regarding guilds), there has been a number of suggestions regarding a how guilds should work. theannalog, having already pushed the guild idea from content and topic centric to principle and idea centric. Taking this one step further, R.o.g.e.r and theannalog have hit upon another fantastic application of the guild idea.
A one on one or a round table debate. The idea is of course to have a debate between two personalities. The debate might start with the words "The War on Drugs", and just continue on from there. Comments on the debate would, of course, be welcome, but the debate would be limited to the two (or however many) orators (for lack of a better word) included in the current debate.
We knocked this around a bit more. We had some ideas regarding using podcasts for this purpose, and dismissed the idea because of issues of hardware requirements and the idea that it has to be done real time, and this might make it more difficult to participate. Also it makes it much more difficult for the average person to find facts to support his argument. But then, the questions arises as to how do we do collaborative posts, so that the orators can post on their own time, have the freedom to do research in between responses, and as a result have a link to sources, etc.
The somewhat obvious answer that theannalog came up with was wiki. She pointed us to a site (pbwiki.com) where you can set up password protected wikis. If we set up something similar and gave out passwords to the debaters, then, the debaters might be able to have control of the debate while still having users (currently not part of the debate) able to comment. The other idea that came right along side and is clearly related is collaborative posts. I, personally, and this was echoed by others, would like to see the ability for multiple to own a post. With the idea of guilds, there could be posts that are owned by the guild. But, to refine this a bit further, I'd like say rather than it being owned by guild members, it could be owned by specific users. Implementing such an idea makes the jump to the earlier debate idea much easier.
The questions we want to present and that we are all thinking about is how do we go about implementing such a debating feature? We would welcome some more ideas.
